About FreeCell Now

More than a FreeCell game

A modern card game experience with original research, strategy guides and analysis of the classic Microsoft deals.

What FreeCell Now is

FreeCell Now (freecellnow.com) is a browser-based FreeCell game, strategy and research project built around the classic Microsoft FreeCell deal set. The site combines a playable game with practical guides, verified puzzle positions and original computational analysis of deal difficulty.

Our research methods, editorial standards and correction process are documented publicly so the work can be evaluated on its evidence.

Original FreeCell research

FreeCell Now maintains the FreeCell Deal Difficulty Index (DDI), a comparative analysis of all 32,000 original Microsoft FreeCell deals. The current dataset keeps solvable, unsolvable and unresolved outcomes separate and assigns numeric rankings only where the analysis supports one.

Research pages publish the methodology version, dataset generation date, scope, limitations and update approach so readers can understand what a score represents and what it does not.

The DDI is a comparative model of deal difficulty. It is not presented as a move-optimal solver score or as a complete measurement of every aspect of human playing difficulty.

How we work

01 Playable evidence

Rules, controls and strategy content are written around the behaviour of the FreeCell game implemented on this site.

02 Versioned analysis

Research outputs are generated through a consistent analysis pipeline and accompanied by methodology notes, scope and known limitations.

03 Source separation

Original analysis is distinguished from established FreeCell rules, historical claims and third-party material.

04 Corrections

Material errors can be reported and substantive corrections are documented rather than silently rewritten.

Research and editorial standards

Our Editorial Policy explains how FreeCell Now approaches factual claims, testing, sources, updates and corrections. The DDI Methodology documents the provenance and limitations of the difficulty dataset in more detail.

If you spot a factual or research error, contact FreeCell Now using the email listed below. Published corrections are tracked on the Corrections & Updates page.

Why FreeCell?

FreeCell turns a standard deck of cards into a game of planning. With every card visible from the start, progress depends less on hidden information and more on how carefully you use the space available to you.

That balance is what makes the game easy to understand, but satisfying to return to. A small decision near the beginning of a deal can open up the board later — or make the next move much harder.

Our card design follows the same idea: by leaving out traditional face-card illustrations, we aim to make ranks and suits easier to recognize across the board. This approach also pays tribute to the simplicity of Paul Alfille's original FreeCell on PLATO.
